Cover personal data before a document leaves your computer.

1. Install on this PC

Download the 90.6 MB Windows installer. Double-click Blackbar from the Desktop or Start menu. There is no account.

2. Open a document

Use File → Open, click the drop zone, or drop a PDF, .docx, or .txt file. Add household names once in Settings so they apply to every file.

3. Review, then download

Uncheck any false positive. Download a new PDF, Word, or text file with the covered text painted out.

Pattern matching finds Social Security numbers, emails, phone numbers, street addresses, account numbers, card numbers that pass a checksum, dates of birth next to a DOB label, and labeled IDs. Names are matched when they follow a label such as Patient or Mr./Ms., or when you saved them in Settings.

What it will miss

Unlabeled names are easy to miss. Older .doc files need a .docx or PDF export first. Image-only scanned PDFs have no text layer, so there is nothing to match. Always read the preview before you send the file anywhere.
